Designing With Purpose: A Year of Growth, Grit, and Grounded Innovation at IRD
Design
By Indu Varanasi
Every year tells a story. For IRD
Design, this one was defined by three powerful words:
Growth. Collaboration. Adaptation.
As we navigated shifting markets, evolving technologies, and new creative
frontiers, the year became a testament to resilience and reinvention—both for
the studio and for me as a leader.
“Design is a journey from thought to completion—and this year reminded me how
holistic that journey truly is.”
A Year of Big-Picture Reflections
When I look back, what makes me
most proud is simple: being agile and adapting In a market defined by
competition, AI, changing client expectations, and the constant value creation,
IRD Design completed significant projects with an underlying philosophy of
‘design consciousness’.
The challenges were real—marketing dynamics, business growth, and the
need to differentiate—but each one sharpened our clarity and strengthened our
resolve.
Projects That Defined Our Year
Julphar Mall: A Moment of Recognition
Julphar Mall emerged as a defining
highlight, earning nominations that validated our design approach and reinforced
our commitment to excellence.
Chhaya: Design With Purpose
Chhaya marked our meaningful step
into India—a project rooted in giving back. Introduced by our very first client,
it carries deep emotional weight. Designed as a shelter for distressed women, it
aligns with our philosophy of empowerment and social responsibility.
“Some projects are built with concrete; others are built with purpose. Chhaya
is both.”
Pushing Creative Boundaries
This year also brought a project
that challenged us to rethink delivery models—splitting work across Concept,
Detail Design, and Tender stages. Delivering a concept-only hotel project
required us to recalibrate our processes and understand new market dynamics. It
stretched us, and we grew.
Leadership, Team, and Culture
My leadership evolved in one key
area: delegation. I’m still learning, but I see the shift.
What impressed me most about my team?
- Their willingness to learn new technologies
- Their ability to stand tall in difficult moments
- Their unwavering “never say die” attitude
Our internal culture strengthened through continuous learning—embracing new
tools, new ideas, and new ways of thinking.
Industry Trends That Shaped Us
This year, the design world moved faster than ever. Key shifts included:
We met these changes head-on—integrating AI for data collection, exploring new
supplier collaborations, and understanding where technology enhances design and
where its limitations require human intuition.
“Technology can accelerate design, but emotion gives it meaning.”
Personal Growth and Perspective
A major breakthrough for me was realizing that
collaborations require experimentation—finding the right fit takes time, patience, and openness.
Books like Clear Thinking by Shane Parrish, Shadows at Noon, Leadership at the
TATAS, Blueprint Mathematics and Creativity, and several autobiographies shaped
my mindset. But the most personal moment of inspiration came from watching my
daughter graduate as a veterinary doctor. In her, I saw a reflection of my
younger self—ambitious, curious, and ready to take on the world.
Another powerful experience was EY.WW, where I witnessed countless women
navigating business challenges with courage and conviction.
Challenges and Resilience
Our biggest hurdle was acquiring
new clients while understanding the evolving marketing landscape. New
collaborations brought both opportunities and lessons.
To navigate future challenges, we’re focusing on identifying
potential
partners who align with our values and vision.
Balancing creativity with business demands remains a work in progress. Joining
creative organizations and clubs helped me appreciate broader shifts in the
industry and stay connected to the pulse of design.
Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter for IRD Design
My vision is clear:
I want IRD to grow beyond me—to stand tall as a team-driven, purpose-led
design studio recognized for its unique approach.
What excites me about the coming year?
- Our entry into the hospitality sector
- A deeper commitment to sustainable design
- AI-driven workflow enhancements
- A shift toward value-based pricing rather than hourly rates
If I had to choose one intention for the year ahead, it would be:
“Use technology, but never lose the emotion behind the design.”
A Personal Touch
Outside of work, the moment that stayed with me was my daughter’s graduation—a reminder of growth, perseverance, and the beauty of seeing the next generation rise.
My quote of the year?
“Three strands make a brand: Emotion. Technology. Experience.”
And to younger designers stepping into this world, my advice is simple:
- Understand and articulate the value you create
- Communicate boundaries clearly
- Know your limits
- And always ask yourself: What do I want to achieve in this project?
